Theories That I Have Incorporated Into My Research

Ferdinand De Saussure
Structural Criticisms of Semiology (the science of signs)
Create meaning by structure & understanding
Cultural meaning causes signs to mean the concept

Technical Codes & Conventions - Mise-en-scene
                                             - Sound
                                             - Cinematography
                                             - Editing

Visual Imagery - Colours
                      - Poses
                      - Camera shots
                      - Costume

Ideology - Values & beliefs of society at the time

Within my final project I have thought carefully about the use of colours in terms of portraying the different personalities of each character and how they are meant to be seen by the audience. For example, the boyfriend is wearing black and white to show the different sides to his personality which shows that he can't be totally trusted because he has a dark side to his personality. Also, Alice is wearing blue which is stereotypically associated with the character Alice in the stories, but I have chosen this because it is an innocent colour and shows her immaturity.

Sven Carlsson
A type of performance is a televised bard. He or she is a modern bard singing banal lyrics using television as a medium. The televised bard is a singing story-teller who uses actual on-screen image instead of inner, personal image. The greatest bards create audio-visual poetry.

In my final project I have used my main characters as the story tellers within my video. They are retelling the story of Alice in Wonderland and I am aiming to get a local band to perform the song and represent the band. On my digipak, I will be using pictures that I took from a concert of the real band. Whereas, on my digipak advert I will use an image that will represent both the band, song and album. This is because it will continue the theme of Wonderland throughout all the texts.

Claude Levi-Strauss Ideas about narrative amounts to the fact that he believed all stories operated to certain clear binary opposite e.g. good vs evil, black vs white, rich vs poor etc. The importance of these ideas is that essentially a complicated world is reduced to a simple either/or structure. Things are either right or wrong, good or bad. There is no inbetween.

In my final project, I have based my ideas on the good vs evil and black vs white side of Claude's theory by saying that Alice at the beginning is wearing a light colour to represent the innocent side of her personality. Whereas, the Red Queen and the Dark Knight are wearing dark because they are meant to be seen as the villains within the story

Theme of my music Video

The theme behind my music video is of growing up emotionally as the Alice that we see when she enters Wonderland and who is seen as the protagonist of the story represents the childish and immature side of Alice who believes that everything is fun and games which is soon shot down when she realises that the Dark Knight has killed the Mad Hatter. Whereas, the Red Queen is the side of Alice that is the mature, adult one who knows what to do and that is who Alice fully becomes at the end of the video which results in her breaking up with her boyfriend.

Digipak Templates

These are the templates that I have found for my digipak, which will include my pictures from the Shinedown concert and I may create a front cover to be based upon the song that I have used. The net I have found will be the main template that I wil use but add another disc to it.

Examples of Adverts for Digipaks

By looking at these adverts for digipaks I have found that most of them have an image of the digipak actually one the advert apart from the Foo Fighters on which just includes the digipaks main image as the advertisement. I also noticed that it generally includes indications of well known songs that are in it. If the band has a logo, it is usually displayed somewhere on the advertisement to give it a sense of identity and familiarity.

Examples of Digipacks

By looking at these digipaks from different genres of music I have found a few similarities within them. They all seem to consist of at least 1 CD which has the music and some others have another CD for the videos. They all have different shots of the artist on the different sections. They also seem to include a booklet within it. I will aim to incorporate most of these into my digipak.

Filming Issues

Currently I have found it difficult to start filming, this is due to the fact that the person that is playing Alice has such a busy schedule with college work and her part-time job and she is the person that is predominately in the video so it is hard to find a time that we both have time to film together since it is too late to find a replacement. Also, I still have yet to find the location for the Queens Bedroom from which she is watching Alice and the Hatter.

Other Music Videos

Shinedown - The Crow and the Butterfly

When looking at some other Shinedown videos I have found that they always seem to have shots of the band singing into the camera. This is an aspect that I will try to put inside my music video by asking a local band to learn the song and I will video them playing. Although I do have some videos that I took when I went to see them live I am unable to use them because they didn't sing the song I'm using.

30 Seconds to Mars - The Kill

Green Day - Jesus of Suburbia

When comparing some of the Shinedown music videos to other alternative rock narrative music videos I have found some similarities that I am hoping to put within my music video. I have found that they all have an aspect of the artist performing the song in some way. I have also found that they focus predominately on the narrative and just cut to the performer at certain times throughout the video. This is an aspect that I am going to try to incorporate into my music video, however, the band that I have asked said that them learning the song would take longer than the deadline for my 1st draft.
