Theories That I Have Incorporated Into My Research

Ferdinand De Saussure
Structural Criticisms of Semiology (the science of signs)
Create meaning by structure & understanding
Cultural meaning causes signs to mean the concept

Technical Codes & Conventions - Mise-en-scene

                                             - Editing

Visual Imagery - Colours
                      - Poses
                      - Camera shots
                      - Costume

Ideology - Values & beliefs of society at the time

Within my final project I have thought carefully about the use of colours in terms of portraying the different personalities of each character and how they are meant to be seen by the audience. For example, the boyfriend is wearing black and white to show the different sides to his personality which shows that he can't be totally trusted because he has a dark side to his personality. Also, Alice is wearing blue which is stereotypically associated with the character Alice in the stories, but I have chosen this because it is an innocent colour and shows her immaturity.

A type of performance is a televised bard. He or she is a modern bard singing banal lyrics using television as a medium. The televised bard is a singing story-teller who uses actual on-screen image instead of inner, personal image. The greatest bards create audio-visual poetry.

In my final project I have used my main characters as the story tellers within my video. They are retelling the story of Alice in Wonderland and I am aiming to get a local band to perform the song and represent the band. On my digipak, I will be using pictures that I took from a concert of the real band. Whereas, on my digipak advert I will use an image that will represent both the band, song and album. This is because it will continue the theme of Wonderland throughout all the texts.

Claude Levi-Strauss Ideas about narrative amounts to the fact that he believed all stories operated to certain clear binary opposite e.g. good vs evil, black vs white, rich vs poor etc. The importance of these ideas is that essentially a complicated world is reduced to a simple either/or structure. Things are either right or wrong, good or bad. There is no inbetween.

In my final project, I have based my ideas on the good vs evil and black vs white side of Claude's theory by saying that Alice at the beginning is wearing a light colour to represent the innocent side of her personality. Whereas, the Red Queen and the Dark Knight are wearing dark because they are meant to be seen as the villains within the story
