Video Idea

At the beginning, I could start with her coming home drunk from a night out, then when she wakes up she's in a forest and has no idea where she is. She could walk around the forest and make some friends who are based upon the characters within the story but are not identical. Her accounter with the Mad Hatter could occur on a field where he is having a tea party/picnic on the grass with toys, this would still give the impression that he is crazy. In the middle, 'Alice' could be chased through the forest by a man all wearing black and holding a black sheet to represent the queens guard trying to get her. At the end, it could finish with the 'Red Queen' shouting 'Off with her head' and then 'Alice' wakes up in her bed again. Costume wise, I would have 'Alice' in a light blue dress or a light blue top with jeans with plain make-up. The 'Red Queen' will wear a red dress and heavily made-up. The 'Mad-Hatter' will wear a bunch of clothes that don't go together and that are very bright colours.

Song Lyrics

If I had a world of my own
Everything will be nonsense
Nothing will be what it is
Because everything will be what it isn't

I invite you to a world
Where there is no such thing as time
And every creature lens themselves
To change your state of mind

And the girl that chase the rabbit
Drank the wine and took the pill
Has locked herself in limbo
To see how it truly feels

To stand outside your virtue
No one can ever hurt you
Or so they say

Her name is Alice(Alice)
She crawls into the window
Shapes in shadows,
Alice(Alice)
And even though she's dreaming, she knows

Sometimes the curiosity
Can kill the soul but leave the pain
And every ounce of innocence
Is left inside her brain

And through the looking glass
We see she's painfully returned
But now off with her head
I fear is everyone's concern

You see there's no real ending
It's only the beginning
Come out and play

Her name is Alice(Alice)
She crawls into the window
Shapes in shadows,
Alice(Alice)
And even though she's dreaming
She's unlocked the meaning for you

This kingdom good riddance
Good freedom and innocence
Has brought this whole thing down

Her name is Alice(Alice)
She crawls into to the window
Shapes in shadows,
Alice(Alice)
And even though she's dreaming
She's unlocked the meaning

She's unlocked the meaning for you
In contrary was, what it is it wouldn't be
And what it wouldn't be it would, you see

Song Choice - Her Name Is Alice by Shinedown

For this song I thought I could do an "Alice In Wonderland" storyline since the story is focused around the famous story of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland".

The band Shinedown are from Jacksonville, Florida which already have had their helping getting onto the music scene with artists such as Lynyrd Skynyrd putting them onto the rock 'n' roll map previously. They formed in 2001 after Lead Vocalist Brett Smith had left his other band. It took a year for the members to be able to collaborate together successfully, once they did it didn't take long for the record labels to come flying in. In 2002, Shinedown signed themselves to Atlantic Records and started working with producer Bob Marlette (who had previously worked with Ozzy Osbourne, Saliva and Black Sabbath) thus creating their debut album Leave A whisper.

Leave A Whisper was expressed as being a collaboration of Skynyrd and Led Zepplin combined with Otis Redding and Staind and Tool -  then mixed into their own concoction of rock 'n' roll/heavy metal. The resulting mixture has been described as 'a true feast on the senses, blending bold strident guitar power, blues driven vocal fury, and cutting edge metallic mayhem into a swirling cauldron of bubbling rock reactants. This is heavy music that stands head and shoulders above today's field of cookie-cutter rock practitioners.'

Codes & Conventions Essay

Each type of genre of music video has different codes and conventions that makers of products from that genre should adhere to. For my project, I am doing a music video for Her Name Is Alice by Shinedown. The genre of this band is described as Alternative rock or post-grunge which have a very specific selection of codes and conventions that I must try to follow, however, I am voluntarily choosing to go against these codes and conventions in order to make my work a bit more unique to me.

After looking at previous Shinedown videos, I have found a few similarities between them all which would be considered a code or a convention which I would have had to follow if I was trying to replicate their style of creation. Most of all, I have found that within the videos there are clips of the band lip synching while looking at the camera and playing their instruments. This breaks down the 4th wall within the shot and involves the audience within the performance. Also, the idea that the clips are used gives a break between the storyline that is within the music video. The use of close-ups on the shots are for us to be able to see their emotions towards the topics that they are talking about within their songs which is effective because we are able to see if the song has some connection to the band, also, by their expression we are able to see how we should interpret the song and what style of song it is, e.g. emotional, break-up, etc. I am choosing to ignore this convention because I think it would be difficult to embed this idea into my music video with the storyline that I am doing.

Shinedown also focus their music videos around some sort of a narrative, which always portrays the meaning of the lyrics so that we are helped to understand the meaning of the song in more depth. I will follow this convention because the music video that I am creating if following the Alice in Wonderland story, therefore, I have no choice but tell a story within the video. The narrative within Shinedown’s songs always consist of the lead singer being in it somewhere which shows that the songs have some significant meaning to the band or to the lead singer in particular because they are able to see what is happening within the video themselves and therefore are retelling the story that had happened to them.

Colour wise, Shinedown focus a lot on dark colours and keeping to the rock music video conventions which is usually dark colours and lots of shadows. This is a convention that I would like to try and put in my video because my story is meant to be crazy and a little creepy twist to a traditional children’s story. Also, they like to finish the story lines, which they incorporate within their music video, by the end of the music video, therefore creating a story throughout the entire song and so we are more likely to remember the story and more likely to watch the whole video to find out what happens at the end. This is another aspect that I will make sure that I include within my project because my storyline as a distinct beginning and therefore will need a distinct ending in order to keep the mirage up throughout the video.

Summary of Summer Work

During the summer, I created a story board for Complicated by Avril Lavigne, which I have also considered for the music for my final project. However, I am still debating what style of music to do. Therefore, I have changed my song to one that is a little easier to find locations for and that is a little bit more challenging as far as filming and costuming concerned.
